With a father who drove a rickshaw and a family with many mouths to feed, Hameed Khan grew up in an underprivileged home. At the age of 4, Hameed suffered an accident that left him permanently disabled in one leg. Despite this, Hameed proved to be a very bright child, and his father wanted him to become a doctor, but poverty and disability stood in the way. Although he had heard about Behbud Boys School, it was too far for Hameed to walk, so he went to a government school. When he became older and strong enough to walk, Hameed applied for admission to the Behbud Boys School, and he was granted acceptance into Class 9. Under Behbud’s expertise and caring teaching style, Hameed blossomed, and two years later, he passed the Matric exam with an A-1 grade. Hameed then passed the Intermediate exam with such high marks that he was able to realize his dream, and he gained admission into Dow Medical College on merit. These five years of medical college have been fully financed by a generous Behbud donor.
As of June 2020, Hameed is in his fourth year at Dow Medical and is taking his courses online due to COVID-19. He has thrived socially at Dow, and the same donor sponsored his surgery, so he no longer needs crutches. From a young age, Hameed has wanted to be an orthopedic doctor and plastic surgeon to fix himself and others who have similar disabilities. Hameed currently attends events at Behbud and one day hopes to give back to the association.
